Noises

There are normal and abnormal noises in the power steering system. Here are some the reasons why this will happen

Normal

  • You can hear a hissing noise from the relief valve during any steering maneuvers
  • It is common to hear fluid bypassing through the pressure relief poppets in the steering gear while in a full turn
  • You may hear the pump growl with certain steering units
  • Abnormal

  • If you hear a "clicking" sound while turning, there could be some front end linkage loose or shifting under the load of the truck
  • If the pump is belt driven, you may hear a "squealing" sound indicating loose or worn belts. Tighten or replace belts.
  • A growling or groaning noise from the pump will happen if the oil supply is too low. It will also happen if the pump is taking air into the system from loose or rotten return line. Tighten claps or fittings and replace hose if needed.
